Pay-as-you-drive car insurance programs have seen revenues rev lately as more customers gravitate toward a policy model that lets drivers pay for only as much insurance as they use.

GMAC offers lower rates to OnStar drivers who can confirm their mileage through the OnStar diagnostic system. The Snapshot plan gives Progressive customers up to 30% savings in 27 states through their pay-as-you-drive model. So far, Progressive says more than 100,000 drivers have said “yes” to Snapshot.

Even California is allowing drivers to pay-as-they-drive after years of debate over whether the program violates consumer privacy and other policy issues. So far only ACSC and State Farm are permitted to offer the program.

How it Works

Pay-as-you-drive works in two ways. Drivers prove their mileage to the insurance company manually by reporting odometer readings at the beginning and at the end of their policy period. If drivers don’t want to self-report, they can use a telematics device. The device plugs into the vehicle’s onboard diagnostics port and automatically reports the mileage to the insurance company.

Allstate’s Drive Wise program in Illinois recently debuted and the company is planning to take that program to more states in the coming year. More and more insurance providers are jumping on the bandwagon, considering a move toward pay-as-you-drive offerings for their customers.

Why Pay-As-You-Drive Speaks to Consumers and Insurers

In a down economy, people want to increase their savings by finding cost-saving options in nontraditional places. Pay-as-you-drive programs give them that opportunity. Insurance companies like the program too because the telematics device allows them to more accurately assess the cost of insuring specific individuals.

The Debate

The telematics automotive system not only sends odometer readings back to the insurer but is used to relay information for automatic roadside assistance and remote diagnostics. The ability of the system to collect such a wide range of information has raised red flags for state regulators and privacy advocates. The biggest concern is that the telematics system reports much more than simple mileage readings. Some of the programs, like Allstate’s program also report driving behavior, the time of day the vehicles is driven as well as braking and acceleration patterns of the driver. Allstate can also tell when their customers drive more than 80 miles per hour-this is acknowledged on the Drive Wise website along with a note that speeding can affect the driver’s cheap auto insurance rate.

Who Pay-As-You-Drive Benefits the Most

There are driving behaviors that insurance providers like to see. Insurers can take customer’s personal information and driving patterns as indications of high or low risk investments. If you drive more often and more aggressively on average the rest of the population, you might be considered a higher risk customer. If you cover fewer miles and demonstrate more cautious driving behavior, you’re a better risk for the insurer to take.

If you’re willing to have your driving behavior, mileage, and speed monitored, pay-as-you-drive programs allow you to get customized insurance coverage. And If you’re a low-risk driver, pay-as-you-drive might save you a significant amount of money.

It’s not a Perfect System

While the insurance industry always tries to weed-out good drivers, it’s not a perfect system. Pay-as-you-drive forces insurers to take a look at real time data collected over a series of days and months. Other programs may take a teenage driver who is careful and conscientious and inadvertently lump him or her in with other teens that drive recklessly.

It’s not the devices that simply record odometer readings that have lawmakers concerned; it’s the “fancier” devices that are causing the debate. Lawmakers want to know exactly what kind of private information will be shared with insurers. The possibility of a GPS tracking system in the telematics device is what worries privacy advocates the most. Do insurers have the right to gather information about the number of times a driver visits the red-light district or has an abortion? Should insurers be able to access that kind of information about their customers?

This issue is what prevents insurance companies from using GPS. For some consumers, the issue is blown way out of proportion. Don’t people use GPS on their phones on a daily basis without worrying about who or what is tracking them?

Wait and See

Consumer confidence in pay-as-you-drive programs may increase as insurers demonstrate right handling of private information. When the FastPass was introduced, drivers were wary of sharing too much information about their driving behavior at tolls. Now these concerns have grown dim as FastPass has demonstrated their ability to separate the right to privacy from the intentions of providing the service.

A car accident can occur under any circumstances. Car owners without sufficient protection suffer from financial problems, including high repair bills. Having a full coverage car insurance policy can provide protection for the automobile owner and the automobile. Under the law, car owners are required to maintain liability insurance. Liability insurance may not be adequate for everyone. However, full coverage enhances this level of coverage. This insurance does come at a higher price because of better advantages.

For instance, full coverage car insurance ensures a vehicle experiencing physical damage receives repair. Types of physical damage can include crashes, acts of vandalism or car thefts. Moreover, full coverage car insurance can help people who receive an injury. The coverage allows car owners to deal with fewer out-of-pocket expenses, which includes hospital bills. Any car owner who wants more peace of mind can contact an insurance company representative. The insurance representative can review steps for the owner to get covered under one comprehensive policy.

Is Cheap Full Coverage Car Insurance Real

Most insurance companies charge more for full coverage compared to partial coverage, such as liability only. Car owners who want or need to have full coverage car insurance still want the best price. Some of these car owners question finding and obtaining less costly full coverage car insurance. Cheap full coverage car insurance does exists. However, obtaining policies that cost less premiums does require patience and time. Car owners should perform their own research. They must gather data and information from insurance-related sources. Owners can begin with their current insurance company. A current company already has background information about the car owner. A knowledgeable representative can explain the criteria used for less expensive protection.

Car owners who seek coverage car insurance protection at a discounted price may need to fall under certain guidelines. One qualification relates to the type of car driven. A flashy car that attracts car thefts may require full coverage. However, car owners can help reduce car thefts. Placing the car in the garage overnight helps. Car owners who have had few car accidents may receive insurance premium discounts. Many insurance companies view these drivers as safer drivers. The companies are willing to reward these drivers with better discounts. Happy car owners remain satisfied policy holders. Insurance company representatives and car owners looking for full coverage should work together. If one insurance company can not provide a discount, another company may be a better solution.

In recent times, insurance buyers have become more careful when it comes to their purchases. This can be largely due to the prevailing economic crisis. Insurance buyers are now turning to the Internet in search for more choices for their auto insurance. However, it is worth pointing out that a large majority of Americans usually do not bother reviewing their insurance policies before renewing them. They typically simply renew their plans and stick with a single insurance provider for years.

There are a number of reasons for this unmindful renewal of auto insurance plans. One of the most common reasons is the lack of time. Most people are just too busy to give time to review their plans or to even consider looking for a less expensive alternative. Some policy holders also tend to develop some special goodwill or company-client relationship with their insurance providers. This automatic renewal, however, should be given careful rethinking. It does not actually take that much time to do some research for a new and cost effective insurance policy. A few hours will suffice and these few hours can mean significant savings. It is advisable to always consider other choices or alternatives every time you are about to renew an expiring car insurance plan.

Insurance buyers should be reminded that even with the knowledge that they might have taken a considerably good deal in the prior year when they obtained their current insurance plan, several changes happen and there may be newer, better, and cheaper options available. It is not even right to immediately grab one from among the first few options presented. If savings can be obtained, they should be obtained even if they only amount to a few hundred dollars.

For those who may already be satisfied with their current insurance providers, it is actually still possible to avail of discounts without necessarily moving to another insurer. They key is to push for it and not just wait for the discounts or savings to be offered. Making overtures to a current insurance provider about contemplating to move to another insurance company is an advisable first step. An insurance provider usually tries to offer bargains to keep a customer or client having the knowledge that such a client may decide to leave.

Savings are important considerations when it comes to shopping or buying almost anything. Foregoing them is just inexpedient and not making an effort to try finding or availing them is just unwise.

Broadly, no fault auto insurance, often known as Personal Injury Protection (PIP), represents any type of car insurance where the insured is compensated for losses by his insurance provider, regardless of whose fault an accident actually is.

No fault insurance strives to provide basic medical protection for people harmed in auto accidents especially during times when treatment is quickly needed or when doctors must recover costs. In a way, this actually also helps to reduce lawsuits.

Having said that, the money paid by no-fault insurance policies are sometimes not enough to pay for losses fully. No fault insurance does not cover pain and suffering also.

In several states, where no fault car insurance is used, the coverage can include payment for healthcare bills, lost pay and replacement services.

Replacement services are the cost to pay someone else to do something you would generally do yourself if you are not hurt for example baby sitting.

In contrast to some beliefs, a no-fault insurance is not a substitute for your medical insurance. Even so, if you are harmed in a vehicle crash, you can use your medical insurance and the no-fault insurance to pay for your expenses and recover the actual losses.

In addition, a no-fault insurance can not be used to compensate for physical damages in a motor vehicle accident. Consequently, if you have any sort of accident and don’t have collision coverage as part of your policy, you will certainly have to pay for the damages to your car or personal property, and your premiums will probably increase.

No fault insurance doesn’t compensate for the non-economic damages in a motor vehicle accident. It means that pain and suffering, loss of pay and other injury related issue are not covered by a no-fault insurance policy. In addition to this, it cannot answer for the damages of the uninsured nor the under-insured in a motor vehicle accident.

In sum, a no-fault insurance policy is basically restricted plan that offers only with a particular problem in an accident. And based on which state you live, a no-fault coverage features a restricted application.

In Los Angeles, for instance, where a no-fault coverage is recognized and utilized, it also makes sense to obtain a much more comprehensive and reliable motor accident policy. In case of accidents, a comprehensive insurance policy can assist recover each economic and non-economic damages for either the insured or the victim.

Nevertheless, no-fault insurance has it advantage. When one gets involved in an accident, for example, a no-fault insurance can assist him collect from his insurance regardless of who was at fault.

Your insurance coverage might ultimately affect your claim in an accident. Based on how fault is determined by law inside your state, having a no-fault insurance might influence the outcome of one’s claim in a car accident.

Recovery of losses in motor car accidents will significantly depend on how you nicely you deal with the scenario. To enhance your probabilities of acquiring full compensation for your claim, you have to talk about matters and clear up the issues together with your attorney.

How can you avoid becoming a victim of a automobile burglar? We analyzed statistics and tips from the experts.

First, the good thing: Robbery in the year 2008 was down 12.7 percent from the last 12 months and reaches its lowest level since the late seventies.

Next, the not so good news: Robbers however stole nearly one million cars in 2008, costing families $6.4 billion. What is worse, thieves who come across private information left in the vehicle are actually working with it for identity theft, a skyrocketing crime with possibly overwhelming negative effects. Therefore, specialists advise do not ever leaving postal mail or important data, including your birth date, driving license number or SSN, in your vehicle.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) advises a “layered tactic” to protecting your vehicle. The greater number of layers you have got, the smaller the risk of robbery.

Layer #1: Wise Practice

These are definitely no-brainer suggestions that you could expect everyone to do, but automobile thieves make a fine business because of people’s carelessness – or idleness. Always do the following, even when parking your car for a short time period:

1. Take the keys with you. Never leave them in the car!
2. Lock your doors/close up your windows.
3. Make sure you park your car in a light area, if possible.

Layer #2: Alarm system or Signal Device

These types of visual or audible devices and markers alert thieves that your automobile is protected. Despite the fact that they can’t always prevent break-ins, their existence usually hold them back it. Such as:

1. Audible car alarms
2. Micro dot marking
3. Tire locks/tire deflators

Layer #3: Immobilizing Products

These units prevent criminals from skipping your ignition and hot-wiring the car. Many electronic devices work together with computer chips inside the ignition key. Many other systems inhibit the flow of electrical power or gasoline to the engine until a hidden switch or press button is activated. Well known 3rd-layer systems include:

1. Wireless ignition authentication
2. Starter, ignition and fuel disablers

Layer # 4: Tracking Units

The last layer of security is a following device which could emit a location transmission to a monitoring station or police as soon as the automobile is documented thieved. Vehicles restored that way tend to be found faster and with much less damage. A number of systems put together GPS and wireless technologies allowing remote vehicle tracking: If for example the automobile is moved, the device will notify the owner plus the automobile can be followed via computer. This kind of automobile recovery systems are:

1. GM’s OnStar – It is factory-installed on GM vehicles; Free for the first year. Afterward, $18.95/month or $199/year
2. BMW Assist – Four years free (model-year 2007 and newer); after that period $199/year
3. Toyota Safety Connect – A one-year, free trial is included on select 2010 Toyota and Lexus models. The renewal fee is $139.95.

These types of tracking devices are one of the best way of security cash can buy. LoJack, for instance, has got an business-leading recovery rate of 90 %.

Although most of those systems will surely cost more than a few dollars, most auto insurance providers offer reduced prices for automobiles with specific robbery deterrents or car monitoring systems; consult with them prior to installing one. Nevertheless, there’s really no replacement for vigilance. There are tons of guys nowadays, just watching and hoping for you to fall.

As soon as you thought you knew every little thing about insurance coverage – along comes gap insurance policy.

Even though it may seem pointless, gap insurance is essential for leasing. And in case you’ve made a small deposit when purchasing a car, a gap policy is often a lifesaver as well. But first, let’s explain why it exists.

As the name suggests, gap insurance protects what typical car insurance does not. Quite simply, it shuts the gap between what your insurance provider will pay in case your automobile is stolen or destroyed and anything you owe the finance provider.

GAP insurance! So, how much it protect you?

Let’s take a test case. Say you bought your vehicle 2 months ago for $25,000. You begin paying at around $500 monthly based on a six percent interest rate. Then, catastrophe strikes: a tree falls on your car and smash it.

You call the insurance provider and it looks into its crystal ball and establishes that during the time of the vehicle accident your automobile was worth only $20,000. The vehicle may only be a couple of months old, but it has already lost twenty percent of its worth. On the other hand, the finance firm still wants the entire amount your own them. With interest fees, taxes and license fees, they figure that to be $27,000.

Goodness! There’s a gap of $7,000 between the $20,000 that the insurance carrier is going to pay you and the $27,000 the finance provider is asking for. A good number of folks are going to be eating Spam dinners for the next two years, but if you’ve got gap insurance policy you can safely buy steak.

Which explains why gap insurance coverage is a must for numerous motorists. Actually, gap insurance coverage is usually required by lease contracts or included within them. If a gap policy is needed however, not included in your written agreement, you need to shop around for this insurance plan (insurance vendors offer it). If gap coverage is included in the lease, confirm just how much is provided and exactly how much you will be paying for it. (Occasionally, rent contracts could include what is known as a gap waiver, which covers you against gap expenses in cases when the rented automobile is announced a total loss – eliminating the need for a gap insurance policy.)

Is gap coverage important for people that finance their vehicles? Clearly, it all depends on your coverage. In case your normal insurance plan is created to repay the completely financed amount, then you certainly do not need gap coverage.

A few things to bear in mind when selecting gap insurance coverage:

1. Whilst the majority of people purchase it whenever a lease contract is initiated, some insurance providers will sell you a gap policy anytime during the lease term.
2. You must be in agreement with all terms of the lease.
3. Your gap insurance plan will not be honored without having collision and comprehensive insurance coverage. Additional, lease contracts normally require that you carry collision and comprehensive all the time.

In case your vehicle is smashed up, or stolen, diligently follow all conditions made by your insurer. For example, some companies expect you to keep on making loan repayments on your destroyed vehicle until the money from the gap insurance is paid out.

So whenever starting car finance or lease, bear in mind to ask your agent or loan officer about gap coverage. In case you have an accident you will be thankful you prepared in advance.

Sudden and awful are terms used frequently to explain auto accidents. You can count yourself fortunate if you have not been involved in one until now. Insurance carriers know that at some point most people will have an accident and file a compensation claim. Subject to the state you reside in, should you cause too many crashes in a short time period you might be required to have SR22 Insurance

Nonetheless, there are steps that everybody should follow when misfortune strikes.

Do not panic – staying in control is very important in such a circumstance. Frequently things are not as bad as they appear. Being calm and collected is definitely your best bet.

Check the other individuals in the car – the passengers and other people involved in the accident must be your primary worry. Look around and make certain everybody is okay. Remember that in some cases the individual injured the most may not be making the most noise. It might help much if you have any first-aid know-how.

Emergency services – From time to time the responsible party may attempt to avoid having the authorities involved. Even if no one is hurt, it is still better to go through the correct channels.

Your insurance company – Getting in touch with your insurance company must be high on your agenda. Its probable that you are negelecting to get an important bit of information or they might have some special instructions. Its useful to have your insurance policy details in the car.

Do not play the blame game – It is not your job to determine who’s at fault. Regardless of whether you think it may be you who caused the accident, leave the decision to the experts. Recalling what took place to the best of your recollection is all you’re expected to do.

Obtain information – There is a lot of information you need to provide and gather simultaneously.. Name, registration number, address, telephone etc. Obviously, insurance information is what you require the most. Find out if there are any witnesses and other passengers.

After all, there is little to worry about if nobody is badly hurt. Getting your car or truck repaired or even substituted will be covered by your insurance policy. It is no surprise that following a crash most people are happy to be unharmed instead of angry that their car is damaged.

Like it or not, crashes are a part of life. Doing our best in a bad circumstances is often all we can do. As the old saying goes – “be ready for the worse and hope for the best”. Make sure you have sufficient cover on your auto insurance policy. Healthcare expenses and other costs arising following a car accident are higher than ever. The liability limits required by legislations are often not enough.

Looking for auto insurance can certainly be extremely complicated. Different choices, legal terminology and occasionally pushy insurance brokers make things even more difficult. It is vital to fully grasp at least the two important types of coverage – full and liability.

You might hear a lot of auto insurance companies suggesting that you get Full Coverage car insurance. The reality is that in many scenarios, this type of cover is better. If you have the bad luck to be in an accident, you won’t need to worry about damages to your car simply because they shall be covered by your full coverage insurance. And that is regardless if you or the other driver was liable. You will discover two elements to full coverage auto insurance. These elements are called collision and comprehensive policy cover. Apart from damages done by another automobile, comprehensive insurance has you covered. Collision Insurance protects you in case you are hit by another automobile whether or not this was your fault or not.

Full cover is almost certainly your best bet if you are still paying for your vehicle. Also if you are buying a new car, your financing company will demand that you get Full Coverage auto insurance in order to keep the loan. If you eventually have finished paying for your vehicle and are a safe driver you may possibly want to consider Liability insurance. Nevertheless, if you have a teenager who will be driving your car or a person over the age of 75 driving your car, you might want to keep Full Coverage auto insurance on your car.

Liability insurance, on the other hand, takes care of damages you may be responsible for if you cause an accident. It is not going to cover the cost of fixing your car. What you really have to consider is are you really sure you can afford to pay for the damages of your car yourself?

For most people, auto insurance means completely different things. Paying as little as possible for insurance is what many individuals consider the most important thing when choosing a policy. For others, not having to stress about a thing is priceless and don’t mind having to pay for as much cover as possible. Often asking an experienced insurance adviser can be quite beneficial.

Remember, no matter which cover is right for you, you still have to compare quotes if you want to find the right deal for you and the cheapest auto insurance.

Study carried out just recently, posted online, shows which cars are the most expensive to insure in 2011. As you can imagine, the high-priced high performance vehicles are at the top of the list. Regardless if you are an excellent driver, with many years of driving experience and a clean driving history, purchasing Mercedes SL65 AMG means you have to pay over $3,500 annually in insurance premiums.

It really is worth identifying that 8 out of the first 14 vehicles in that list are Mercedes – S65 AMG, SL63 AMG, CL65 AMG, CL600, G55 AMG, SL65 AMG, CL63 AMG, SL550. 2 models of each manufacture BMW, Porsche and Auston Martin complete the list.
Of course, if the SL65′s $198,750 recommended retail price is within reach, maybe you do not worry too much about saving cash on car insurance rates. However , when you are a normal car owner, your auto insurance rate really should be a consideration when shopping for a motor vehicle. In fact, why look for the hottest deal on a car only to discover it has exorbitant insurance costs?

A vehicle’s premiums for collision and comprehensive coverage are largely based on that vehicle’s “loss history,” reflecting how often and what type of claims other motorists have typically filed for that model. Cars chosen for speed and flash – and also vehicles generally picked by young, inexperienced motorists — compile claims and therefore garner higher insurance costs.

Include a car owner having a history of traffic violations, claims or accidents and you have a recipe for genuinely painful car insurance rates.

This year’s cheapest vehicle to insure is the Chrysler Town & Country LX minivan. Its national average annual premium is $1,091.80, a third of the cost of insuring the Mercedes SL65 AMG.

The Toyota Sienna minivan and its LE version earn the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively, on the list of least-costly cars to insure.

Discounts for additional safety equipment may also bring insurance costs down. Such equipment consists of electronic stability control, which can help motorists avoid accidents, and overhead airbags.

Moving to FL from a different state. Getting Florida Auto Insurance, but wanting to keep registration for the next year or so in the out of state registration I have. Can this be done? I know that FL says you are required to register your vehicle with them, but I have a year and a few months left on my out of state registration still. My question is, can I get Florida auto insurance and keep my out of state car registration? I know that the opposite cannot be done, meaning if you want to register in FL you cannot keep your of state insurance, you must get FL insurance. But is it mandatory that if you get FL auto insurance, you must register in FL?

You’ll have problems doing this.

Namely, when your other state insurance policy notifies your other state DMV, that the policy has been cancelled, and not replaced with another policy in that state, it will automatically suspend your plates. Eventually, that will get your license suspended.

A Florida auto insurance policy won’t meet the legal requirements to keep plates from another state active.
